Artist's Statement:
PaTricia is an emerging acrylic artist who discovered her passion for art in her mid-50’s. She had taken an acrylic class with her daughter through community education, which was taught by a very inspirational teacher, Chris Matteson who believes that we all have creativity within us. The rest is history! She had spent 32+ years in the corporate world as an accountant. Now, she finds her “balance” in exploring and studying art. Through classes, seminars, independent study and traveling throughout the U.S visiting museums and galleries, she has found her voice in her own art.
As she paints, she embraces the beauty and grace she beholds. When she captures and expresses on canvas a moment in time to remember, it gives her the utmost pleasure. She is fascinated by expressions on people’s faces that can say more than words what a person is feeling inside. And when it comes to nature, she is most at peace with herself, so when painting her wildflowers and landscapes, it brings her back to a state of serenity. Her style is dominated with clean lines and strong colors, almost photographic, yet, unlike a photograph which blurs out most of the background, she is able to bring out more of what your eyes are able to see and delights in controlling that aspect. Painting on canvases and masonite boards from 11” x14” to 24” x 36” canvases is her choice. Although she has done commissioned work from time to time, she prefers to paint more freely without concerns of what someone else might be wanting to see. She finds it challenging enough to please her own eyes. To actually paint something that turns out to please another person, she considers quite a cool!
“PaTricia Is a Fiscal Year 2005 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible in part by the Minnesota State Legislature and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.” Her grant plan will be focusing on a series of people engaged in activities in the Twin Cities, expressing the diversity she has always appreciated. Also, she will be presenting her “Up North” series based on her roots, the Iron Range, at the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids in January 2006 which gives tribute to her roots, where she developed her love for nature and where she learned her deep respect for people and hard work.
