Artist's Statement:
When
I chose painting as an art major several years ago, I was very attracted
to a nonrepresentational style known as abstract expressionism. This style
emphasized the physical process of painting expressing art on a spiritual
and emotional level. I painted very large pieces using a very intuitive
approach combining shapes and free flowing areas of color and texture.
However, I felt that I was limiting myself as an artist. I began to move
in new direction. That direction was determined by my career in education.
I started out as an art instructor nineteen years ago and have worked as a
special education assistant for the past fourteen years. I have always
encouraged kids to explore by experimenting with their creativity. As a
child I was encouraged to approach my own creativity in a positive and
open manner. I was very curious about the hidden messages found in
fairytales and the spiritual symbolism that thrives in ancient myths and
legends of cultures from around the world. They are full of wonder and awe
and come from a magical time where no boundaries existed between animals
and humans. I am very inspired by such mythology and lore and the mystical
energy that animals share with us.
