Fine Artists/Metro East DISPLAY PROGRAM GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Timing/Coordination of Installation and Removal of Work When the art is not removed on time, the new display artist is inconvenienced; when work is not installed on time some of the venues have become upset at having bare walls for too long. BORDERS, in particular, is sensitive to this problem. If you are displaying in BORDERS, please read and follow the special instructions on the venue information sheet about installation/removal. Please coordinate with the artist displaying before and after you as per contract agreement. Leave sufficient time to contact the artist with work on display before/after you to coordinate the transition. Both artists need to be responsible for coordinating with each other. Please help us keep the venues happy, and make each other’s lives easier by treating the display transition professionally. If you know you are going to be out of town or otherwise difficult to reach just prior to a changeover, take the initiative to make contact early. If you cannot personally install or remove your work, take responsibility for finding someone to do it for you. FAME is prepared to assist artists with the transitions if necessary. If you cannot coordinate schedules, or have a problem with the changeover, please contact the FAME Display Program Coordinator (listed below) as soon as you know there may be a problem. There have been instances in the past when one artist was unable to reach another and work was not removed/installed on time. Unless prior arrangements have been made, the understanding will be that the artist removing work will do so before 1 pm on the day specified for changing work, and the artist installing work will install work as soon as possible after 1 pm on the same day. (For BORDERS, the understanding will be that work is to be removed and installed before store opening on the specified day.) If work is not removed on time, and we are unable to contact the artist, the work may be removed by a FAME Display Program volunteer so that the new artist can hang his or her work. If new work is not installed, and the new display artist cannot be reached, an alternate artist may install work in its place. The originally scheduled artist may petition to be rescheduled. (Hopefully, none of this will ever be necessary.) Site Visit Even if you have displayed in a particular venue before, it is a good idea to have a look at the current set-up before taking your work over to hang. The venues do not necessarily let us know about changes. If you do not see the listed number of hangers and you need them, please call the contact person for the venue. The extra hangers are sometimes put in storage. Hanging Work Please have your work framed and ready to hang. Please use a wire on the back most of the display venues use the Walker System with hi-holders, which are intended for wires, not sawtooth hangers, stretcher bars or clips. Some of the venues also have the security clips to keep the work from being knocked off accidentally. If the security clips are available, please use them. It is helpful to have a pair of pliers to tighten/loosen the thumb screws on the Walker hangers. Please do not over-tighten, and please do not hang really heavy work; this system is intended for work up to about 20 pounds, with the exception of Hartford, they can accommodate 50 lbs and have hangers if you need them. If you are unfamiliar with this system, please call the display coordinator listed below for more information. If you wish to place exhibit/price labels on your work, either attach them directly to the frame or use a non-damaging method of placing them on the wall (such as sticky-tac). We now have places for you to put business cards, brochures, and your artist statement. There have been times when these holders have been stolen, if you do not see holders for these items, please contact the display coordinator so holders can be replaced. IF You Need Assistance/Questions Please contact me as soon as possible so that I can be of assistance.
